This carved boxwood pipe tamper is English, and dates from the eighteenth century. Tampers, or pipe stoppers, are used by smokers to press down the tobacco in their pipes. This is needed to ensure that the tobacco burns evenly. For over 200 years it was fashionable to make small, pocket-sized stoppers in a number of materials ranging from wood to silver. Many, like the greyhound shown here, demonstrated a considerable amount of ingenuity and skill.
