Title: 2001N40 George Cross Medal
Description: 2001N40
George Cross Medal, 1941
Awarded for bravery during the Birmingham air raids of 15th-16th October 1940 to Section Commander George Walter Inwood (1905-1940) of the Home Guard, 27th May 1941.

From the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website:
'Sect. Cdr. Inwood was called to a cellar in which a number of people were trapped following a heavy air raid in Birmingham. The house had been struck by a bomb causing a gas leak, all in the cellar were unconscious due to the effects of the gas, Inwood was lowered down by rope and managed to save two men. Although suffering from the gas himself he went down again but this time he collapsed and died.'
