Birmingham Black Oral History Project R1141 Oral History Interview - Esme Lancaster 01/02/1992 Interviewee: Esme Lancaster Interviewer: Doreen Price This is an oral history interview with Esme Lancaster, recorded in 1992, discussing her life in Jamaica and the UK. Esme lived in Jamaica until 18th December 1950 when she travelled to England with the aim of improving her education. She worked as a teacher, social worker and supported children and woman through playgroups and fostering. She spent time living in Bristol, Birmingham and South America, returning to Jamaica on occasion. These recordings include racially explicit content, including discussions of racism, prejudice and violence; and language and phrasing that we would not use today. Some of this content might be unsuitable for younger listeners or triggering for People of Colour. We recommend reading the description for each track before choosing to listen. Track 1: Early Life in England Esme talks about how moving to England was initially seen as temporary but most people then stayed longer. Track 2 : Visiting Jamacia Esme visited Jamacia to discuss her future plans with the estate that sponsored her travel. Track 3 : Childcare Esme talks about her experiences of looking after children. Track 4: Childcare cont. Esme talks about her experiences of looking after children. Track 5: Social Work Esme talks about working for different charities in Birmingham supporting people with varying needs. Track 6: Retirement Esme spent her retirement doing voluntary work in the community helping working families with childcare. Track 7: Black Identity Esme talks about her identity as a Black person. She continues to talk about looking after children. Track 8: Childcare cont. Esme continues to talk about looking after children. Track 9: Funeral Esme talks about planning her funeral. Track 10: Returning to Jamacia Esme talks about her plans for returning to Jamacia. |
