1885M1563 Plate - The Legend of Shooting the Dead Body, 1540-1575 Maiolica, tin glazed and painted earthenware Attributed to: Giacomo Mancini The plate shows a scene from the 'Shooting the Dead Body' tale. A nobleman died in Persia and two different people claimed to be his only son and heir. A judge devised a test to discover which one was the true son. An archery competition was arranged with the body of the dead man as the target. One of the boys shoots and hits the body, whilst the other boy says that he cannot desecrate the body of his father. The second boy is announced as the rightful heir. |
