Description: |
1904P276 Mary Magdalene at the Door of Simon the Pharisee - Compositional Study, 1858 Artist: Dante Gabriel Rossetti Charles Fairfax Murray had claimed that this work was a later one than the finished pen drawing. Virginia Surtees (Rossetti Catalogue Raisonne), however (vol. 1, p63), claims that this is an early work. More recently Christopher Newall has pointed out that this drawing stands on its own and was then re-worked as the finished composition in the Fitzwilliam Museum. Mary Magdalene may well be based on Fanny Cornforth. |
