The Black Brunswicker - Figure Sketch, 1859-60
Artist: John Everett Millais

From Preraphaelites.org:
This sketch relates to the drawing and oil painting in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, and a drawing in Tate Britain. The scene shows an English girl saying goodbye to a German soldier sweetheart on the eve of the battle of Waterloo in 1815. The girl was modelled by Charles Dickens' daughter, Kate, and the soldier by a private in the Lifeguards.
