Title: 1906P583 Thomas Hood's Ruth - Two Figure Sketches
Description: 1906P583 [Recto - Front]
Thomas Hood's Ruth - Two Figure Sketches, 1855-58
Artist: John Everett Millais
Verso: reversed outline sketches for the same figure.
These studies were for an etching to illustrate a poem entitled 'Ruth' appearing in Passages from the Poems of Thomas Hood (etchings by the Junior Etching Club), 1858:
And her hat, with shady brim,Made her tressy forehead dim; - Thus she stood amid the stooks Praising God with sweetest looks.
The etching appeared as plate 27 in the volume. Another sketch for the same subject is reproduced in J. G. Millais' The Life and Letters of Sir John Everett Millais (vol. 1, p. 327). Millais also illustrated another poem in the volume - 'The Bridge of Sighs'.
