Title: 1992M16 The Narcissus Clock
Description: 1992M16
The Narcissus Clock, 1776-80
Ormolu with white marble, bronze, enamel, glass, brass and tin.
Makers: Boulton & Fothergill

In mythology Narcissus was a youth whose beauty was dazzling. One day a maiden who loved him in vain prayed that he might feel what it was to love and meet no return of affection. One day when he drank from a fountain he saw his own image looking back at him; thinking it was a beautiful water-spirit living in the fountain, he fell in love. Of course the image was a reflection, and Narcissus, not being able to touch the reflection, could only look at it. He faded away at the waterside, his body was replaced by the narcissus flower that we know today.
